2021 is a unique year for climate change issues, as the UK will host the 26th United Nations Conference of the Parties on Climate Change in Glasgow in November. These climate negotiations will be the largest international summit the UK has ever hosted and will bring together over 30,000 delegates, including Heads of State, climate experts and campaigners, to agree a coordinated plan of action to fight climate change.
The challenge is a very ambitious collective action, but it must be tackled now to preserve the Planet where we all live and with the UN’s coordinating role.
Italy is also on the front line of climate issues and, in partnership with the UK, will host the preparatory events for the COP, including a session dedicated to the contribution of young people to addressing climate change and the Pre-COP Summit, which will be held in Milan from 28 September to 2 October.
As part of this favourable international momentum, the UN Global Compact is making a strong commitment to support its business members around the world to accelerate their ambition for concrete steps towards a net-zero economy. Particularly important in this regard is the Business Ambition for 1.5 campaign, which encourages companies to set science-based targets, aligned with the goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
The event is therefore a chat between UNGC and the UK and Italian Local Networks on the role of the private sector in ensuring a net-zero future.
